TECHNIQUE: Mixed Media Canvas

Here is an easy mixed media project developed and written by Belgian artist France Papillon:

PanPastel Colors are a very versatile medium when it comes to mixed media. On this canvas piece, I limited myself to basic products, like gesso, molding paste & embossing ink. But the possibilities are endless!

To create this canvas : you will need a canvas board – 9.5 x 7″ (25 x 18cm)

Apply a thin layer of gesso over the canvas.    Appliquez une fine couche de gesso sur tout le canevas.

Use a sheet of paper kitchen towel as a mask, to cover the bottom half. Using a palette knife, apply a generous but smooth layer of Golden Absorbent Ground on the top half, going over the edge of the kitchen towel, to obtain an irregular separation line. Leave to dry.
Utilisez un sopalin déchiré comme masque, afin de couvrir la moitié inférieure du canvas. A l’aide d’un couteau, appliquez une couche généreuse d’Absorbent Ground de Golden sur la moitié supérieure, en recouvrant le bord du sopalin afin de créer une ligne de séparation irrégulière. Laissez sécher.

Color the entire surface of the canvas using several PanPastel tints (color reference numbers with .8). Carefully blend the colors with a clean Sofft tool. Spray fixative lightly over the colors to isolate them.
Colorisez toute la surface du canevas en utilisant différente teinte (Tint .8) de PanPastels. Prenez soin de mélanger les couleurs à l’aide d’un Sofft tool propre. Fixez les couleurs à l’aide d’un fixatif.

Using a piece of kitchen paper towel, create a mask that only reveals the top corners of the canvas. Apply Golden Soft Gel (Matte) on a stamp using a sponge brush. Stamp in the top corners making sure you stamp all the way to the mask. Wash the stamp immediately, don’t leave the gel medium to dry on the stamp.
A l’aide d’un morceau de sopalin déchiré, créez un masque qui ne révèle que les coins supérieurs du canevas. Appliquez du Soft Gel (Matte) de Golden à l’aide d’un pinceau éponge sur un tampon. Tamponnez les coins en vous assurant de couvrir la surface jusqu’au masque de sopalin. Rincez immédiatement le tampon, ne laissez pas le gel medium sécher sur le tampon.

Leave the gel medium on the canvas to dry fully.  Laissez sécher le gel medium sur le canevas.

Accent the top corners using the same palette of PanPastel colors but using their pure colors (.5) this time. The gel medium will act as a resist. Blend the colors carefully using a clean Sofft tool. Spray lightly with fixative to isolate the colors.
Accentuer les coins supérieurs en utilisant les mêmes couleurs de PanPastels en nuance de base cette fois. Le gel medium résistera à la couleur. Mélangez bien les couleurs à l’aide d’un Sofft tool propre. Fixez les couleurs à l’aide d’un fixatif.

Using a palette knife and a circle stencil, apply molding paste on the bottom half of the canvas. Again, use a sheet of kitchen/paper towel as a mask to protect the rest of the canvas. Let dry.
A l’aide d’un couteau et d’un pochoir à cercles, appliquez du molding paste sur la partie inférieure du canevas. A nouveau, utilisez un sopalin déchiré comme pochoir pour protéger le reste du canevas.  Laissez sécher.

Colorize the circles with metallic PanPastels. Apply the first color using a round (No.1) Sofft Knife. Add shading and highlights mixing several metallic PanPastel colors.
Colorisez les cercles aux PanPastels métalliques. Appliquez une première couleur à l’aide d’un round (No.1) Sofft Knive (Sofft tool en forme de couteau arrondi). Rajoutez des ombres et des effets plus clairs en mélangeant différents PanPastel métalliques.

Accent the circles by shading with metallic oil pastel, by applying the oil pastels on the edge of the circles. Blend using your finger.
Accentuer les ombres sur les cercles aux pastels à l’huile, en appliquant les pastels à l’huile sur le bord des cercles. Mélangez à l’aide de votre doigt.

Stamp with embossing ink in the area where you want to add embellishments. Apply a darker (shade .3 or extra dark .1) PanPastel color by dabbing it to avoid the embossing ink to move. Heat-dry to fix the embossing ink. Take any excess PanPastel away by gently wiping with a clean Sofft sponge.
Tamponnez de l’encre à embosser sur la partie que vous voulez embellir. Appliquez un PanPastel plus foncé en tapotant pour éviter que l’encre ne bouge. Fixez à l’aide d’un pistolet à chaleur afin de fixer l’encre à embosser. Enlevez le trop de poudre PanPastel en frottant délicatement avec une éponge Sofft tool propre.

Add splatters of Ecoline and acrylic paint.   Tachetez à l’aide d’Ecoline et de peinture acrylique.

Fray the edges with sanding paper and accentuate the edges with Sepia and Jet Black Archival ink.
Grattez les bords au papier verré afin d’effilocher le canevas, puis accentuez les bords à l’aide d’encre Archival Sepia et Noire.

Add rusted metallic embellishments.
Ajoutez des embellissements métalliques rouillés.
